We’ve long believed that avatars will become the next method of communication, and with emerging technologies such as XR and AI, the need for a persistent and dynamic avatar identity has never been more important. With this in mind, we’ve invested in building a suite of tools over the years to enable anyone to create their own avatars, experiences, and UGC platforms (we call them Party Apps!).
Through early avatar adoption of cultural tastemakers such as Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Cardi B, Migos, DJ Khaled, and hundreds more, we set out to build tools and use cases that would enable limitless compatibility and customization of our avatars for everyone. Our Tool Kit includes our Avatar and Interoperable Frameworks, which enables brands, developers, artists, and creators to build gamified UGC avatar Experiences and Party Apps - all connected through the Genies’ interoperable layer, which is made up of two core components:
Visual interoperability is defined by how a user looks. Through our auto-rigging technology and Avatar Framework, visual interoperability enables limitless compatibility and customization across digital fashion, Things (props and objects), and avatars.
Behavioral interoperability is defined by the personality of a user, and is accounted for through our unique Traits Framework, which offers a layer of metadata that shapes a user’s personality based on their behavior in one Experience to the next.

In the early days of Genies, we were just a few kids working above a taco shop and built our first Genies - 2D avatars with VERY big heads.

Our avatars quickly became popularized by culture. If a celebrity was using an avatar, it was almost always a Genie. These activations were focused on fan engagement, bespoke digital experiences, and celebrity brand deals. Eventually we partnered with Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group, the NFLPA, NBPA, and MLBPA - setting us up to be the official avatar and digital goods provider for their entire rosters of talent.

In preparation for our avatars to be ported throughout a wider variety of interactive experiences, our 2D avatars soon evolved to become 3D. These 3D Genies became the most dynamic, high fidelity avatars on the market. It was at this time, during our Series C fundraising, that Bob Iger joined our board to help us build this vision.
