Seamlessly Convert 3D Models to Game-Ready Assets: The Power of Genies’ autoRigging Tech

Seamlessly Convert 3D Models to Game-Ready Assets: The Power of Genies’ autoRigging Tech

Mar 21, 2025

When we think of any iconic character, so much of their identity comes from their distinctive look — from Buzz Lightyear’s spacesuit to SpongeBob’s signature shirt and tie. These details aren’t just decoration or accessories; they define identity. The same is true when creating avatars: fashion, props, accessories, and digital goods are essential components for self-expression and customization.

That’s where autoRigging comes in. It’s the engine behind fully customizable avatars and user-generated content (UGC) in Party experiences. Whether you’re using our AIGC tools or uploading your own 3D models — like a leather jacket to wear, a glowing sword to hold, or even a motorcycle to ride — autoRigging instantly transforms them into game-ready assets, compatible across any Party experience. Leveraging AI and machine learning, our autoRigging technology empowers technical and non-technical users alike, allowing anyone, at any skill level, to seamlessly generate and share interoperable, fully-rigged assets and avatars. With a Party, IP owners and creators can transform user engagement from passive consumption into active co-creation, immersive social interaction, and dynamic play.

At Genies, we've been committed to building tech that can power the next era of digital experiences. As AI, gaming, and XR increasingly converge, the demand for a persistent and interoperable avatar identity layer is more critical than ever. In this rapidly evolving digital landscape, user-generated content (UGC) has emerged as the essential foundation for meaningful creation and connection online. We believe that for digital experiences to reach their fullest potential, digital creation needs to be accessible for all skill levels, interoperable across different experiences, and limitless in terms of creative freedom.

What is autoRigging and how does it enable a thriving UGC ecosystem for Parties?

Integrating 3D art for digital ecosystems and platforms can be a hassle. In the case of wearables like a shirt or sneakers, an artist typically would create a 3D model, fit the design to a character, rig it with an animatable skeleton, and integrate it as a playable game asset, all while hoping the shirt looks great in every environment. This manual process results in a high technical lift, requiring specialized skills, tooling, and a lot of time.

So, how are we supposed to populate virtual experiences and Parties with infinite UGC content possibilities if these legacy methods create such a high barrier for creative participation? With Genies, you can automatically convert any created 3D model into a fully-animatable, game-ready asset. Whether it’s a wearable, a vehicle, or an interactive prop, the system adapts and refits assets to seamlessly integrate across different avatars and Party environments without requiring manual rigging or adjustments. It’s a core component of our Avatar Framework which powers our “Everything works with Everything” mantra.

AutoRigging is just one part of Avatar Framework - a system that combines AI, machine learning and computer graphics to deliver a fully customizable and interoperable experience across Parties, ensuring compatibility with any avatar, fashion, props, and more. Key automation capabilities alongside autoRigging include Avatar autoGeneration, enabling users to create stylized avatars from photos or favorite character inspirations; our AIGC Asset Pipeline for generating 3D assets like clothing from text or image prompts; Wearable Refitting which allows these autoRigged creations, such as fashion, to automatically adjust to different avatar shapes, sizes, and styles; and our UGC Animation Pipeline that translates and applies real-world motion into digital animations to any avatar. The AI and ML services in these tools allow them to be used by technical and nontechnical users, lowering the technical barrier for submitting game-ready 3D assets. Together, these features empower limitless creativity and unlock scalable, seamless UGC creation across any Party.

What can the autoRigging technology do?

It’s one thing to read about the power of autoRigging on paper; it’s another thing to witness it in practice. Below you can see how various items of custom clothing mold to our demo avatar, where you can see a new outfit automatically conform to her body. Beyond this, the wearables are also instantly compatible with numerous other avatars, showing how, once a given item is autoRigged, it becomes universally compatible with other avatar shapes and varieties across any Party. All of this activity comes from a single source file upload.

How does it work?

The first step in our process is that assets — like fashion or accessories — get fit to animatable skeletons via a trained ML (machine-learning) model. This allows the previously static clothing to animate along with our avatars. Simultaneously, we run ML to fit body and face skeletons to the avatar. We also look at segmentation so we can understand areas of the face like eyes and lips, which helps us transfer expressions to the avatar. At this point, we have game-ready assets that can all be animated and are all interoperable with each other in a runtime environment.

What this means is that any asset fits any avatar, whether it’s the size and proportion of an elf or that of a hulk like figure. Normally, changing avatar shapes would require users to submit fashion or accessories in multiple shapes and sizes to fit these various dimensions, but our process allows for any asset to fit on every avatar after a single upload.

We also offer layering technology, which allows you to design complete outfits, placing a jacket over a shirt, for example, and have the entire ensemble still appear perfectly natural while maintaining high fidelity. We tackle difficult areas like fingers and facial expressions with technology that delivers best-in-class avatars.

What sets our technology apart?

When we see an avatar moving around in a stylish, perfectly coordinated outfit made up of many different components — clothing, jewelry, accessories and more — we’re not really thinking about the steps required to get to that point. But every single one of those components requires a complex series of calculations and processes to make it game-ready, and fully interoperable from experience to experience.

What autoRigging does is streamline this process completely, allowing you to focus on the parts that matter: imagination, creativity and vision. If you can dream it up, you can make it automatically game-ready, outfitting avatars with it and creating the fullest possible expression that can travel from one game experience to the next.
